Poland Salary Basics: PIT and ZUS Contributions Explained

August 10, 2026 · 3 min read

Poland's take-home pay calculation involves two main pieces: progressive personal income tax (PIT) and mandatory social security contributions administered by ZUS (Zakład Ubezpieczeń Społecznych).

Personal Income Tax (PIT)

PIT is progressive with two main bands — a lower rate (12%) on income up to a set threshold, and a higher rate (32%) above it — after a tax-free allowance that shelters the first slice of annual income entirely.

ZUS Contributions

Separately, employees contribute to ZUS for pension, disability, and sickness insurance, plus a health insurance contribution. Combined, mandatory contributions often add up to around 13-14% of gross pay on the employee side — a significant deduction that applies before PIT is calculated on the remainder.

What Our Calculator Estimates

Our Poland calculator applies a single combined effective rate covering PIT and typical ZUS contributions for a standard full-time employment contract (umowa o pracę). Contract type matters a lot in Poland — freelance and B2B arrangements are taxed differently — so treat this as an employee-contract estimate.
